The Story of a Young Artist: Taia’s Art Through the Trials of War
Taia Salenko is only 14 years old, yet she has already experienced more than most adults could imagine. The war forced her to flee her hometown of Kherson — a peaceful place by the Dnipro River — leaving behind her childhood, her home, and everything familiar. Life under occupation, escaping through countless checkpoints, enduring explosions and constant shelling became her new reality. But in the midst of chaos, she found strength in one thing — art.
Through her drawings, Taia recreates what she has lost and what she dreams of. Her artwork reveals a vibrant, touching world where her beloved Kherson lives in peace, where birds soar freely over golden Ukrainian fields, and where her grandparents greet her at home with love. With every brushstroke, color, and line, Taia weaves memories, emotions, and hopes into powerful artistic masterpieces.

Each of her pieces is a reflection of her soul — a memory of peaceful Ukraine and a longing to return home. Her creativity is deeply rooted in Ukrainian culture, traditions, and nature, but also shaped by the events that changed her life and worldview. She paints symbols of Ukrainian identity with special tenderness: kalyna (viburnum) for family warmth, angels as protectors and symbols of hope, and legendary heroes and mythical figures who help her make sense of the adult world.
Today, Taia continues to create. Every design you see on our t-shirts, hoodies, and mugs is more than just a drawing — it’s her way of sharing her love for Ukraine, her belief in victory, and her dream of returning home. Taia has donated her artwork to support the Hope – Children of Ukraine foundation, helping other children affected by war. This is her personal contribution to Ukraine’s future — a gift of hope to the next generation.
All proceeds from the sale of Taia’s artwork go directly to support Ukrainian children impacted by the war. The Hope – Children of Ukraine charity fund provides humanitarian aid, psychological support, an online English school, and career guidance programs for kids in need.
Yana Vlasenko-Bernatska — the artist who brings Ukrainian culture to life for children, communities, and the world.
“I believe Ukrainian art can heal souls. And if my artworks can help children — I give them with gratitude.”
Yana Vlasenko-Bernatska is not just a creative soul — she’s a true ambassador of Ukrainian cultural heritage. Her educational journey includes three top institutions, from embroidery to scenography to special education. She’s a proud member of both the National Union of Artists of Ukraine and the National Union of Folk Art Masters.
Yana breathes life into tradition. Her art blends folk decorative styles with modern graphics and painting. She’s known for creating giant murals, participating in international exhibitions, and bringing Ukrainian identity to the world through her works.
She holds five national records of Ukraine, including:
- The largest patriotic mural “The Call of the Clan”
- The longest fence painted in Samchykivka style
- The largest map of Ukraine made from camouflage nets
- The largest Kyiv-style mural “The Flower of Hope”
- The largest number of Easter eggs painted simultaneously
She also founded a museum called “Svitlytsia” at a Kyiv school — a cozy cultural space where she hosts art workshops, traditional celebrations, and educational programs. Her heart beats for children, for those who need beauty, care, and healing.
Now, Yana has joined the Hope Shop project.
She has generously donated her illustrations for free to help create a special line of apparel and gifts, where 100% of the profit goes to support children affected by the war.
When you buy a t-shirt, hoodie, tote, or mug with Yana’s designs — you’re not just buying an item. You’re giving hope.
